I was a bit weary of coming up against the Premier League and FA Cup champions in the season opener at Wembley Yesterday. A newly layed Wembley pitch looked solid and I hope it puts to bed some of the complaints the stadium has had over the past year.
The game was played at a very good pace and I was more excited to see new boy Javier Hernandez in action up against some real competition. I was extremely impressed by the display of Brazilian twin Fabio at left back, in the absence of ever present Patrice Evra. He was up and down the left side and showed some great pace, determination and technical ability throughout the game. Paul Scholes was running the show as usual and the lad said in a post match interview that Fabio Capello should not bother to call upon his services in future.
Edvin Van Der Sar was in fine form as usual and made numerous saves to ensure the trophy would be returning to Old Trafford. Antonio Valencia was giving Ashley Cole a torrid time down the right flank and he looked like a player who has been at United for life the way he was on the ball so confidently. He netted the opener after a long ball found Rooney who slid the ball into Valencia’s path, only for the Ecuadorian winger to break the deadlock.
United went 2 up when new boy Chicharito found the net with a unordinary finish to say the least. Chelsea pulled one back through youngster Sturridge, but it was not enough as Dimitar Berbatov sealed the result with a cool chip to put the game to bed. Chelsea looked a lot sharper with the introduction of Didier Drogba but could not do more to help his side back into the tie.
I am really looking forward to the new season and have a feeling the Old Trafford cabinet could be getting a few new silver visitors come the end of May 😉
