Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said after the defeat that his captain had suffered ligament damage, but hoped the injury was not too serious. However, after scans confirmed the bad news, Ferguson stated at a press conference, “We thought it was a bad one and unfortunately he’s out for the season.”
The Serbian rock landed awkwardly after a challenge on Basel forward Marco Streller! This is extremely bad new for the entire United camp…
The injury to Vidic, who was named Barclays Player of the Season for 2008/09 and 2010/11, is a huge setback for Manchester United’s title aspirations. With Rio Ferdinand rarely able to play more than 1 or 2 games on the trot, United are going to have to rely on their youngsters (Jones and Smalling) to fill the gap at centre back. Personally, I don’t believe Jonny Evans is up to the task.
