We sat down yesterday evening over a nice little ‘green salad’ π and chatted about his life, his interests, photography, his inspirations and how he got into the game! It was more of a laid back chat and a little introduction about Twitter, as he is not yet up to speed and is very keen to learn his way around that zone, after a few inspirational words from none other than myself. Who I might add only learnt how to use Twitter recently. I know, I was way behind the times, but before I really had my own brand I didn’t really see the need to have an account…Well, enough about that, read on and get a better idea about this beasts career and some of his thoughts about the photography industry! Enjoy.
The Interview:
Mr. Cape Town:
When did you realise that your path in life was going to be based around photography?
Sivan Miller:
I discovered my talent for photography after I got an e-mail from Oprah magazine saying they wanted to use one of my landscape images in there next issue for a double page feature. I was blown away and knew that I had to be on the right path!
Mr. Cape Town:
I see you are doing a lot of fashion shoots these days…That must be nice, for lack of a better word π
Sivan Miller:
Yes, the fashion industry is great, lets just say there are a lot of amazingly good looking woman out there π
Mr. Cape Town:
Next question has to be; Who is the hottest squeezer you have ever worked with?
Sivan Miller:
I have worked with many ridiculously hot woman, but the one that stood out in particular has to be Adeline Mocke. She was recently in Idols, and was featured on the front cover of FHM last month. She kills me!!!
Mr. Cape Town:
Haha, no worries my man she kills me too π Dude some of your landscape stuff is beast, how do you get that mystical effect that you are so good at?
Sivan Miller:
That landscape is more of a painting than an image. It is made from multiple images of the same scene, all put together, blended seamlessly and then retouched over and above that.
Mr. Cape Town:
Are you working with any brands at the momentΒ that I might recognise?
Sivan Miller:
Yes, indeed I am, my clients at the moment are; Wembley Square, Vida E Caffe, Karma Lounge, Cafe Sofia, YDE, Fringe Magazine, Tashkaya, Ice Models, Y Models, Topco management, Aleit Wedding Service.
Mr. Cape Town:
Lekker man, we both know my favourite there has to be Karma Lounge π Where do you see yourself in 2 years?
Sivan Miller:
In 2 years time I see myself shooting on more of a commercial level and the top end magazines, such as Vogue, Mercedes Benz and Sports Illustrated. I am like you Dyl, I appreciate and always look to work with top brands!
Mr. Cape Town:
What do you think about the quality in the industry right now? As far as I can see every Tom, Dick and Harry take photo’s these days!
Sivan Miller:
Well, there are only really a handful of really talented photographers in Cape Town. The quality of work is on a very high level but compared to the international standard it is a bit under par. Everyone has cameras these days, but its not the camera that takes the image. You don’t go to a restaurant and after eating your great meal compliment the chef on his amazing utensils. Its exactly the same comparison with photography. The camera is merely a tool for you to show others what you see π
Mr. Cape Town:
What’s the sickest job you have ever done?
Sivan Miller:
My favorite job ever done has to be my latest one which involved me shooting 11 different models, all wearing 11 different designs which were all made from recycled clothing. These clothes were gathered from specially made bins which were put in all the Vida E Caffe’s, Cape Town and Joburg. It was a really great project to work with so many different people ranging from different countries, cultures and races.
Mr. Cape Town:
Awesome, I should have studied bladdy photography at this rate…What’s the sickest brand you have ever worked with and why?
Sivan Miller:
My best brand to work with so far has to be Bombshell / Superstar Clothing. They exhibit there clothes at YDE. The shoot was held at the new 15 on Orange Hotel in town. We got given a proper home theater room, no jokes, Surround sound, massive tv, and super comfortable furniture. This was just our βbaseβ room. Throughout the day we got free drinks, food and amazing service.
Mr. Cape Town:
That sounds like a brand that is right up my alley! Well done to them, and finally I have to ask…What is the most weird photo you have ever taken?
Sivan Miller:
The wierdiest picture I ever took was last month. It was a image of 2 girls on a bed, in a very weird position, it looked so weird in fact that I asked them to change it up. 3 weeks later im looking on the Internet and find a image that was taken for Vogue Italy November. It is basically the same image, very scary…
Mr. Cape Town:
Jesus, that is weird…Well thanks for your time my man and I will be seeing you at Alien this weekend no doubt π Go check out his website for some more awesome pictures and stay tuned for our sick competition we will be running next week. You could stand the chance to win an awesome shoot with this talented young man and I’ll throw in a case or 2 of Bavaria Premium beer as well π
